  • Beyond the Scroll: How I Use Social Media to Actually Stay Connected

    Daily writing prompt
How do you use social media?

We’ve all heard that social media makes us more isolated. We scroll through curated highlight reels, feel a pang of envy, and close the apps feeling more lonely than before. But recently, I decided to take a different approach. Instead of using social media passively, I decided to use it as a tool to bridge the distance between me and the people I love.

Roughly two-thirds of social media users say that keeping in touch with friends and family is a major reason they use sites like Facebook, and I am definitely in that group.

Here is how I use social media to turn passive scrolling into meaningful connections.

    1. DMs Over Public Comments

I’ve made it a rule to use direct messages (DMs) more often. If a friend posts a story about something tough they are going through, or an exciting new job, I’ll send a private, thoughtful message rather than just “liking” it. It shows you care, starts conversations, and allows for deeper connection, rather than superficial interaction.

    2. “Ambient Awareness” with Instagram Stories

I love using Instagram Stories to share small, mundane moments—a pretty sunset, a good book, or a quick laugh. It provides what’s known as “ambient awareness”, a sense of knowing what’s happening in my life without us having to talk 24/7. When I finally do call them, we feel caught up.

    3. Tagging and Sharing Memories

Do you have that one friend who constantly sends you memes or TikToks that perfectly fit your humor? I’m trying to be that friend. Tagging friends in funny videos or sharing posts that remind me of them is a fast way to let someone know they are on my mind.

    4. Embracing Video Chats

When text isn’t enough, I use Facebook Messenger or Instagram to make video calls. If you have family abroad, these platforms allow us to share important moments and live face-to-face, which is a huge comfort during holidays or birthdays.

    5. Curating My Feed for Joy

Finally, I’ve become strict about my feed. If an account brings me down, I mute or unfollow them. I focus on following people I love, family, close friends, and creators who inspire me.

    The Bottom Line

Social media is a bridge, not a replacement for real life. It’s not about how often I check my phone, but how I use it to build up my real-life relationships. By being intentional, sending a message, sharing a private moment, or initiating a video call, I’ve found that my online connections have actually fortified my real-world ones. As always I will keep on BLOOMING THROUGH IT!
